How can I tell when my garlic is ready to harvest?

In New England, garlic is planted in the late fall. During the spring, garlic scapes are harvested from the middle of the plant. This signals the plant to start forming the garlic bulb.

Garlic: garlic is ready to harvest when the bottom 2-3 leaves begin to turn brown. To harvest use a spade to gently loosen the bulb from the soil and pull from the base of the stem. Garlic can be used fresh. To cure your garlic for storage and later use: first trim off roots from bulb, next use a towel to gently wipe off dirt, Lay garlic on a drying rack in a cool, dark place for 7-10 days until completely dried. Trim off and discard stem. Store bulbs for future use.
